According to Greek mythology, Icarus fell into the sea nearby as he was escaping from Minos on Crete. His father, Daedalus, buried him here, and the island was named after him.
The island itself is also mythical. The people are kind, helpful, patient, and look out for each other. Mutual respect and honor are very important to them. Although the island’s permanent population is small, only about 8,400 people, many tourists visit from May to October. Spiritual festivals, called “panigiria,” are typical, where the villagers gather, eat, drink, dance, and party together until morning. These festivals are mainly held in July and August on both the smaller and larger settlements of the island.
Due to the mountainous terrain and winding roads, the island is mostly accessible only by car. It is worth spending a few days to visit the main attractions. You can rent a car or motorbike in Agios Kirykos and Evdilos (the two main cities of the island, both of which have a harbor).
There are several thermal springs on Ikaria, which have a particularly beneficial effects on joint problems. One such thermal spring is located right in Therma.
Therma is adjacent to Agios Kirykos, one of the largest cities on the island. It can be reached on foot from the beach in just a twenty-minute walk, or by car, which is about 3-4 km away. Restaurants open from May to October welcome guests with fresh seafood and local specialties. Sitting on the terraces of cafés, guests can admire the bay of Therma and the mountaintops of the opposite island of Furni.
Many rooms and apartments are open to those who want to stay. Local small hotels and apartments can be booked through Booking.com, Airbnb, and Tripadvisor. The accommodations are mostly simply furnished, clean, and serve comfort. The staff and hosts are kind and helpful everywhere. The breakfast selection, where provided, is varied and delicious. Accommodation is not cheap in high season, but it is affordable. What is priceless is the hospitality.
If you ever visit Therma once, you’ll definitely want to come back.
